Up to two hens or other fowl may be kept without creating a nuisance. Three to eight require a suitable enclosure, shelter, food and water; coops must be 30 ft from property/street lines and 100 ft from neighboring dwellings, schools, hospitals and eating establishments. Roosters and geese are prohibited.
The stricter enclosure and twice-weekly cleaning conditions apply to flocks of three to eight; zoning provisions also apply.
Asheville, NC · Buncombe County
Fowl require city licensing and an annual fee. Roosters are prohibited, with narrow grandfathered/nonconforming-use exceptions. Birds must remain in a fully enclosed house and run, with enough space for their number and type. Ventilation, drainage and sanitation requirements apply.
The referenced nuisance provision generally sets a 10-foot lot-line setback, with an exception tied to being at least 50 feet from another occupied household. The animal-number permit provisions may also apply; ask Animal Control about your total animals and layout.
Ayden, NC · Pitt County
Up to six hens on a single-family lot; no roosters or chickens at multifamily dwellings, including duplexes. Keep birds in a secure covered coop in the backyard, at least 10 ft from property lines and 20 ft from other residences and listed public/commercial buildings.

Badin, NC · Stanly County
Up to four hens on a single-family lot in residential zoning districts; no roosters. Secure birds in a coop at night and keep them on your property during the day. Coops and pens must be in a side or rear yard and meet the zoning district’s accessory-building setbacks.

Poultry is a special use in the referenced zoning districts. Five chickens count as one animal unit per 5,445 sq ft. Fenced containment must generally be 150 ft from an adjacent dwelling, and associated structures/enclosures need zoning and building approval.
City limits and ETJ are treated differently. Ask planning how the lot-minimum, existing-use and later-built-neighbor exceptions apply to your address.

Residential, noncommercial fowl are exempt from the general livestock acreage requirements, but zoning must allow the use. Coops and pens belong in side or rear yards, at least 10 feet from property lines or street rights-of-way and 50 feet from another person's dwelling. Provide at least 2.5 square feet of coop floor and 5 square feet of ground per bird.

Poultry may not remain in city streets or public places. Roosters and other fowl whose habitual crowing or other noise constitutes a public nuisance may not be kept.

Full NC poultry provider list ↗Have your town, flock size, birds’ ages and a short timeline ready. For a health concern, photos or a brief video can help the clinic understand what you’re seeing.
Organize signs with the symptom checker →Farms live in their own directory. Browse breeders by town and breed, then connect directly.
Explore the Breeder Directory →“Last checked” means we reviewed linked public source information on that date. It is not a phone confirmation of hours, availability, NC bird acceptance or farm-call coverage. Call before crossing state lines or shipping samples. Extension staffing and local programs can change.
Vet entries use the practice’s published poultry services or the NC Agriculture backyard poultry list. Labs use official state or university sources. Extension contacts use NC State, Virginia Cooperative Extension, UT Extension and Clemson’s official office pages. VA, TN and SC coverage includes selected border-area offices plus statewide office finders; it is not a complete vet directory.
Chicken-specific ordinance summaries cover the cited provisions, including relevant limits and exceptions; they do not review every requirement for a parcel. Where current chicken provisions could not be confirmed, we provide a public office email from an official source. Clerk and elected-official contacts are labeled as referrals. Email addresses were checked online, not delivery-tested. Charlotte also includes official domestic-fowl permit guidance because its linked code library was unavailable.
Ordinance coverage currently remains North Carolina. County associations help you browse; they do not determine which office governs a street address. Ask about zoning, recent amendments and your address, and check HOA or deed restrictions. An unconfirmed provision or missing listing does not mean chickens are allowed.
